The Story of Friar João da Esperança

João Pedro Mésseder; Illustration: Elsa Lé

The Monastery of S. João de Tarouca was founded in 1140, at a time when D. Afonso Henriques, still very young, was not yet recognized by the Pope as the first king of Portugal. However, it was already considered so. At that time, with his army and the nobles who supported him, one of the main actions of D. Afonso was to conquer lands that still belonged to the Moors, creating conditions to provoke them and expand the territory of what would become the kingdom of Portugal.
