Maria da Conceição Vicente; Illustration: Teresa Lares

They say she is Princess Moira, in an eternal wait for whoever breaks her charm. Forbidden loves threw her, like a serpent, to the bottom of the cave where she hides. Of this princess, only the tears that flow from the cave through the eyes of a fountain are known. A fountain that will never dry up, as long as the enchantment lasts. And the source is there. On a sunny slope called Bicha Moira. Other voices, echoes of more remote beliefs, believe that she is a sorceress of the waters… or divinity of the sources. Coming from the bowels of time, it brings with it water, the promise of fertile life in a blessed land. Who it is, it doesn’t matter. It matters that the story has princess charms – sorceress, or goddess… it doesn’t matter – and tears of hurt love. Reasons enough for us not to let its beauty be diluted in the waters washed away from oblivion.
