The Little Beings of the Forest

In this story, the little creatures of the forest offer a man who had to climb the hill every week with a sack on his back to ensure that there was no shortage of bread at home, the “gift” of a rotary mill in the village, which he undertakes to grind for the whole village and to give them the maquia, the portion that the millers take from the flour they make as payment for their work. The man accepted: all said and done!

With the mill nearby, a new era began in the village. The miller never failed to scrupulously honor his commitment. When he died, his three sons liked the inheritance of the mill, but not the requirement to hand over the maquia, which brought the little beings of the forest back onto the scene… “The little beings of the forest” is a recreation of a tale collected by Francisco Silva in the village of Avelal, in the Serra do Caramulo.

It is also the sixth book that Maria da Conceição Vicente has dedicated to rewriting the legends of the municipality of Águeda, after “O Diabo do Alfusqueiro”, “A Bicha Moira”, “o Lavrador e o Lobo”, “O Moleiro e as três árvores” and “O Rapaz que queria agarrar o Sol”. How great is the folk wisdom and wise the poetic writing that Maria da Conceição gives them!
