The boy who wanted to grab the sun is the recreation of the legend explaining the name of a village located on the western slope of the Caramulo mountain range: Póvoa do Vale do Trigo. This legend was collected by Francisco Silva, from the inhabitants of the aforementioned village and (re)written by Maria da Conceição Vicente, in continuity with «The miller and the three trees», «The farmer and the wolf», «The moira» and «The devil of the Alfusqueiro».

“When the villagers gathered, they recognized that, after all, the village was surrounded by a wheat crop that was going to give them bread, bread white like that of the lands of plenty, and means of livelihood. The boy believed that, in his generosity, the sun had shown him the true gold of the earth, and he gave himself full of enthusiasm to his task as a farmer.

And so that no one would forget what once happened there, he decided that that land would be called Póvoa do Vale do Trigo.

And it’s still called that today.”
