Satoru is a boy who lives in Japan, in a village situated between the foothills of Mount Fuji and a cursed forest – the Forest of Whispers – of which countless frightening stories are told.

It was from his great-grandmother, the oldest woman in the area, that Satoru learned the art of folding paper (ori kami) and making the most wonderful sculptures. His favorite is the Stork (Tsuru), a symbol of happiness and good luck. One day, Satoru is drawn to the Forest of Whispers, from which no one has ever been able to return.
