Author: António Torrado (Lisbon, November 21, 1939 – Lisbon, June 11, 2021) was born in Lisbon, but with family roots in Beira Baixa. He was a poet, fiction writer, playwright, author of works on pedagogy and pediatric research, and a storyteller par excellence, with many of his books and short stories translated into several languages. He was a journalist, editor, teacher, main producer and head of RTP’s Children’s Programs Department. His bibliography currently includes more than 120 titles, including his literary work for children, which was awarded the Calouste Gulbenkian Grand Prize for Children’s Literature in 1988. In 1974 and 1996, his books were included on the Honor List of the IBBY – International Board on Books for Young People. According to the critic and researcher José António Gomes, “Torrado has established himself as one of the most important figures in our post-April 25 literature and it is hard to find an author today who, in such a balanced way, knows how to combine humor, criticism and the signs of a deep knowledge of children’s imagination.”
